Introduction
On Friday, May 11, 2007, Galerie Thomas Schulte is opening an individual exhibition with new paintings by Juan Uslé, with a preview from 7 to 9 pm.
As the American critic Dan Cameron describes a significant aspect of Juan Uslé's work, "Behind the often startling playful textures and opacities is an artist on a deadly earnest mission to restore validity not simply to abstract painting, but to painting itself. Uslé takes on the formidable challenge to make a case for the visual and intellectual vitality of abstract art...He has set about re-investing the language of lyrical abstraction with intensity and purposefulness."
Uslé's works appear based in the seemingly fragmentary visual world of postmodern urbanism and technological civilization, engaging with the constant process of filtering with which our "inner eye" responds to today's optical mass of infor-mation. In this way, they can find their own compositional balance in a particularly poetic fashion.
