Larger than Life (Knackered): Angela de la Cruz

介绍
As of Tuesday, July 28th, Angela de la Cruz will be showing her installation Larger than Life (Knackered) in the gallery's Corner Space. A monumental red and yellow ochre canvas lies wedged into the space of the 9 meter high showroom, as though a result of a violent crash landing. Somewhere between a painting, sculpture, and architecture, it seemingly writhes between the walls. The object, comprised of traditional painterly materials, does not deny its origin, yet seeks to break free from it, by distancing itself from technical and narrative questions: the image carrier is not the carrier of an image, but is of much more significance in its conceptual form.
“[Larger Than Life (Knackered) is] unaware of its own excess, in terms of both its volume ans its mass. Larger than Life (Knackered) is a monumental painting, which, unable to move, remains trapped at a certain point in space.” (Angela de la Cruz)
Larger Than Life was first shown in 1998 in the Royal Festival Hall of London. After presentations in Spain (MARCO Vigo, 2004; Sevilla Museum of Contemporary Art, 2005) and Israel (Herzliya Museum Tel Aviv, 2012), the piece is now on display for the first time in Germany.
