LAWRENCE WEINER

Galerie Thomas Schulte is very pleased that Lawrence Weiner accepted our invitation to show a work in our Corner Space this summer. Our nine-meter-high corner at the busy intersection of Charlottenstraße and Leipzigerstraße is now bedecked with the following work of Weiner, presented in German and English: VERTROCKNETE ERDE & GESTREUTE ASCHE ODER VERTROCKNETE ERDE & VERGRABENES GOLD ODER / DRY EARTH & SCATTERED ASHES OR DRY EARTH & BURIED GOLD OR. The bilingual pairing of the work is clearly legible in its urban landscape, open to allow passers-by to contemplate their personal relationship to the statements before them and, in doing so, stretch the aspects of interpreting art in public places. Weiner is one of the pioneers of conceptual art as seen with the publication of his first artist book in 1968, “Statements,” his premier exhibition of works presented solely in language. Weiner defines his work as sculpture which consists of its primary form of language and the material it refers to. When the installation of the work, which was designed especially for our Corner Space, ceases to exist, the frame of what the language represents to its viewer will remain; in other words, its concept remains within the context of the work’s receiver. This is what endures over time, a continuum whose values remain with its viewer if he or she so chooses.
