介绍
As its contribution to this year’s Gallery Weekend Berlin (May 2 to May 4), Galerie Thomas Schulte will open two parallel exhibitions, the first showing new, large format works by New York artist Jonathan Lasker, and the second presenting two sculptural installations by Bernhard Martin. This is Jonathan Lasker’s second major individual exhibition with Galerie Thomas Schulte; for Bernhard Martin it will be his first solo show at the gallery.
Both artists will be present at the Opening Reception on Friday, May 2, from 6 to 9 pm.
The five new large format paintings by Jonathan Lasker (born in 1948 in Jersey City, New Jersey, lives and works in New York) continue the line which the artist has been pursuing since the 1980s: exploring the possibilities of painting in light of the increasingly conceptual turn in art. The formal language of Lasker’s paintings is abstract and his visual means stretch from simple scriptural drawings that often cover the entire surface of a work to highly paste-like applications of paint that confront one another on open color surfaces.
Lasker’s painting is precisely calculated. His paintings are images of images. In small and tiny formats, he develops his compositions to the last detail, to enlarge them and depict them in precise detail. In so doing, he inserts a filter between painterly spontaneity of the drawing and the final painting. This synthesizing of the image lends Lasker’s painting a puzzling and disturbing dynamism that makes it unique, granting it a solitary position in the world of contemporary painting that has allowed Lasker again and again to exert a great influence on other artists. He has over the years become one of the great international masters of painterly composition. -
