In his latest paintings, among them "A line between this world and eternity" (2024), created using gesso on aluminium, Khan broadens his investigation of this colour. These works represent a further departure from Khan's previous oeuvre, incorporating both music and text onto a single plane for the first time.
The artist has created a layered composition comprising a square field of musical notations and scores on a rectangular ground of text derived from his own personal diary. This frame-within-a-frame structure is a device that Khan believes will facilitate a more profound visual experience.
Khan's combination of music and text represents the rhythm of the world reverberating through daily life. He presents both languages simultaneously, with music serving as the universal language. The incorporation of musical elements, including music and musical scores, represents a long-standing motif in the artist's practice. Khan discovered a software program that could be used to translate the historical paintings' color schemes into musical notes. The resulting musical scores were then transformed into a physical stamp, which was applied to each panel. Over time, this process resulted in the creation of his completed visual compositions, with the application of multiple layers.
In these new works, Khan leaves an exposed band of pure colour across the bottom of the painting, untouched by music or text. This creates a sense of visual contrast, as if part of a pictorial and cultural landscape.1之 17
